Greek island Photo Trails

 

Courses designed for beginners to intermediate photographers.

 

Greek island photo trails is a new holiday company set up on the stunning

island of Crete by photographer Ashley Johnson. Ashley lives on the North

West coast of Crete and is the base for Greek Island Photo Trails.

 

Seascapes, landscapes nature in abundance,churches monasteries,

Crete has it all,endless opportunities for all levels of photographers.

 

A maximum of six photographers on every course ensures your tutors

personal attention.The course gives an insight into composition how to

use light,color and position of objects in your picture to make it pleasing

to the eye how to cut out clutter and focus on your subject.

 

The course will not be technical but a fun way of understanding in simple

terms the basics of what makes a good image and how to apply it to your photography.

How to get creative using light, movement and other simple

techniques.With all subjects the light is key to making excellent images,

when the sun is low in the sky, (the golden hours) early morning and late

afternoon studies will be high on the agenda.

 

We will look at shutter speeds and apertures,how to get creative using

these tools those without these functions on their cameras will non the

less find this instruction invaluable should they upgrade their equipment.

 

Bring along any extra gear such as tripod, polarizing filter and other filter

systems such as lee or cokin.It doesn't matter if you have none of these just

bring your camera with the instruction manual for reference.

 

The accommodation has been personally vetted by us for its friendliness and

comfort. Dual English/Greek family run this very pleasant hotel.

The hotel is situated in the small quiet village of Daratsos close to Chania town

.

The combination of personal tuition, majestic surroundings, comfortable

accommodation and genuine friendliness of the Cretan people result in a

5 days of photography tuition and excursions
Accommodation for 7 nights.
Transport to photography sites and transfers to and from airport. (At designated airport and designated times)

 Discount rates.
Two photographers sharing the same accommodation are entitled to a 20% discount. . The price for the second photographer being set at 750euro/ £510. ( 1,000euro £691 for the digital course.)

The price of a non photographer sharing the photographer’s accommodation is  450 euro/£305 on a bed and breakfast basis. Evening meals or lunch either in the
hotel or at a traditional tavern will be chargeable for the non-photographer.

What is not included in the price?

 

Flights.

Car hire/transfers to and from airport other than Chania.

Travel insurance.

Film developing costs and computer consumables.

Lunch, the hotel can provide packed picnic lunches (6 euro. pp) should we

 want to eat on the move. 

The Itineary 

Flexible, each day different places chosen for the type of photography

we want to achieve. There are an abundance of special places and things to see,

from glorious scenes to monuments and castles, rivers, mountains, quaint

traditional villages’and woodland.The list goes on andon.So we will choose

what to photograph on the evening before the trip.

Maybe we want to do some landscape work or perhaps another day we will

want to get creative in movement of waves or silhouettes.

 

Too many photography holidays rely on the same places or subjects to work with. 

I believe that the ‘off the cuff’ surprise encounter is the most interesting this way

we will learn about different styles.

 

Perhaps you want to focus on the abundance of nature and capture the wild

flowers or the colourful butterfly’s .we will of course take into account the

local interests like the olive harvest ,honey making, local faces etc. or maybe

we will visit old Chania port take in the architecture of the cobbled back lanes

with its pretty shops and restaurants.

 

 I have lived here for 3 years and each day I find something different and

challenging and to have a set itinerary I believe will loose the excitement

of finding something unusual.As we plan our day then we can decide where

to eat lunch in a mountain tavern with fantastic views or a picnic amongst the nature.

 

 

 

We may decide to catch the early sunrise over Souda bay next to the British war

cemetery or the sunset at Vallassarna bay with the mountains as the perfect

backdropto the scene.

 

Each day we will have a discussion about

 our work any questions you have can be answered here.

 

There are many small industries here on the island producing a wealth of farmhouse

type crafts like lace weaving or the famousCretan rug makers. Traditional Cobblers

can still be found hand crafting shoes from a piece of leather.

 

 Local faces like old women in black garb, men sitting a café neon drinking the powerful Greek coffee and playing backgammon a very serious pastime here in Greece.

 I always half expect a gun fight starting like in a John Wayne western 

over some discrepancy in the game.They take their backgammon very seriously

here in Greece.Concentration and passion all make for excellent candid

photography.

Our aim is that you have a wonderful stay on this truly stunning island,

capture your visions, make new friends and in the end take home some

wonderful images and the ability to move forward in your chosen medium.
